When there is something else

Some people with hiatus hernia panic when the symptoms get worse, or when a new symptom appears for the first time. This is understandable: we all tend to look upon any pain in the chest, for example, as angina – or even a heart attack – until proven otherwise. (Angina is pain that falls short of a full heart attack.) For others, the problem is the exact opposite: they assume, because they know they have a hiatus hernia, that any new symptom is probably caused by it, and that they do not need to worry. That can be as bad for you as panicking unnecessarily, because that chest-pain this time could be a heart attack – and you need to act quickly if it is.

This chapter is therefore for both these groups of people – for want of better words, the panickers and the laid back.
